iOS Developer Interviewing Guide

Currently, there are more than 700 million iPhone users worldwide, and this number is expected to grow. Therefore, companies that target Apple fans are actively looking for iOS developers. If your company wants to deliver apps for Apple devices, such as iPhone and iPad, then refer to our interviewing guide that will highlight the most-required technical skills for iOS programmers.

Here are the approximate skills that you should check when interviewing an iOS developer candidate:

  1. Being an advanced iOS/MacOS user. Apple is a closed ecosystem, so it’s important to understand the working principles of its operating system because it has a range of restrictions that are specific and unique to iOS or MacOS. Besides, you will need MacOS to develop iOS apps.
  2. Familiarity with Apple’s App Store review guidelines. To submit apps to the App Store, iOS programmers should follow a set of rules and best practices even before they start the development so that the app is successfully accepted.
  3. Proficiency with Swift and Objective-C – programming languages for iOS apps. Swift is a new modern language for iOS development, and now it’s used more frequently than Objective-C. However, if the candidate is using Swift as a primary language, then they should know at least the basics of Objective-C and vice versa. As for Swift, the candidate should be familiar with the basic syntax, classes, inheritance, initialization, control flow, and Objective-C interoperability.
  4. Ability to write, edit, debug, design, unit test, and upload apps to the AppStore with Xcode, an IDE for iOS apps development.
  5. Good knowledge of iOS design guidelines and OS X Human Interface Guidelines. The user interface of iOS apps should follow the strict guidelines to be as native and intuitive as possible. To be more specific, the candidate should be familiar with at least the MVC (Model-View-Controller) architecture pattern.
  6. Knowledge of UI design frameworks and APIs, such as CocoaTouch, Foundation, or UIKit.
  7. Experience with Core Data, the most important framework for storing data on Apple devices.
  8. Knowledge of graphics frameworks, such as SpriteKit and SceneKit.
  9. Familiarity with REST APIs that are needed to connect the iOS apps to the back-end.

Other possible questions and practical tests will depend on the specifics of your project. We wish you good luck in finding the best iOS developer!
